Throwback Thursday: A Start-Up Idea is Born Out of Frustration

It’s been already 11 years since Kelly (my business partner) and I were featured in Alberta Venture magazine’s October 12, 2006 issue.

Here I am on the cover, wearing a brown jacket that I still have, and thankfully still fit into. I tend to “hang on” to things a long time.

If you are an inventor, or a wannabe inventor, you’ll want to read the story about our journey to bring Hang & Level, our picture hanging tool, to market. In the article we talk about where the idea for Hang & Level came from and how the company secured financial support, conducted market research, figured out where to manufacture the product, made prototypes, developed relationships with retail store buyers, and made a TV commercial. It covers everything that a new entrepreneur has to do to take an idea and turn it into a real commercial product.

Looking back, I can tell you that the road to where we are today hasn’t been easy and that we’ve had many challenges and roadblocks to overcome. On many occasions I thought of quitting, as the stress was huge.  Getting this company off the ground while also raising a young family required countless hours working all day, plus evenings and weekends. With that said, I’m glad we persevered because I could not imagine my life today without our team and our company, Under The Roof Decorating.
