Fill a BIG Blank Wall on a Budget

Most people think that big art comes with a big price tag, but that’s not always the truth. Nowadays you can easily find a large canvas for $125 or less. That said, see how we turned a big blank wall into an eye catching focal point without breaking the bank.

Before shopping for your walls

Asking yourself these questions will help you stay focused when shopping and to avoid wasting time looking at pieces that are not right for your space.

  • Which room is it for?
  • What activities are done in the room? Do you need a calming piece for a reading nook or bedroom, or a conversation piece for the dining room?
  • What size of wall space are you trying to fill? Measure and carry the measurements with you.
  • What shape of art are you looking for? Square? rectangular? Tall and skinny? Will it hang vertically or horizontally?
  • How many pieces do you need?
  • What’s your color scheme? Are you thinking of going neutral? Bright?
  • What’s your budget?

Pro tips:

  • Take a picture of your room of where you want to hang your piece. You’ll be able to refer to it at the store and confirm if colors will fit with your existing décor. It’s amazing how sometimes being at the store make us forget what our rooms look like.
  • Most importantly: make sure it will fit in your car or truck. Seems obvious, but it happens more often than you think, even to us!

How we hung our canvas

Sure, you could just lean it against the wall and be done with it, but then it could risk getting damaged either by the traffic of people coming in and out of the room, pets, the vacuum cleaner, or it could simply fall over.

We suggest hanging it and here’s the easiest way to do it:

  • Move your canvas up and down the wall to determine the right height - having someone help assess the height from a distance is always helpful
  • Although this is piece is big (47” X 59”) it’s also super light, which makes it easy enough for one person to hang it.

To hang our canvas we used CanvasHangers. They’re small brackets that fit in the top corners of a canvas to secure it to the wall. Because a bracket is placed in each top corner, it keeps a canvas straight and never goes crooked. No need for re-levelling every time someone bumps into it or a door is slammed shut. As you see here, you just push on the top corners to hang the canvas.

Confused? Watch this short 15 second video to see how it works.

In case you’re wondering, we hung our canvas 9”  from the floor, low enough to be enjoyed when sitting, but also high enough to meet your eyes while standing. Because it’s a cozy reading room, it’s important to consider both heights.

Notice how flush against the wall the canvas is hanging? If it was hanging with a sawtooth hook or picture wire, the side line wouldn’t be as pretty as the hardware would be seen from the side.

It’s amazing how this little reading nook went from boring to “hello deer” in the blink of an eye. This nature-inspired canvas is calming, and if you don’t have time to go out hiking, why not bring nature inside to you? Since the canvas has lots of white space and the deer has only a few colors, this large canvas could easily be relocated to another room without clashing. We’re considering it a neutral. Could be fun in a mud room, don’t you think?
